6 DEC 2014: Prawning & Cycling with Unity Sec PSG

Prawning at East Coast Park

It was a drizzling Saturday morning. But nothing was gonna stop the fathers and kids of Unity Secondary go prawning at East Coast Park.

It was the first time for Robyn and Alvin, and we enjoyed our beginners' luck in fishing out quite a number of prawns from the pond, and straight into the BBQ fire that we set up by the side.

Big thanks to Richard Tan for organizing this DadsForLife program.

Big juicy catches of the day by Robyn and Alvin!

After prawning, a few families went cycling.

We cycled to the jetty and saw many people fishing.

15-21 DEC 2014: Ski Val Thorens in the French Alps

Val Thorens Ski Resort

Val Thorens is our best ski destination to date. It has been voted the best ski resort in the world for 2013 and 2014, and is the highest ski resort in the French Alps. That's why Kong SQ recommended it to ensure we had snow before Christmas.

Val Thorens Ski Resort in the French Alps

We were thrilled to get into our new ski attires ordered from Taobao.com.

Alvin was thrilled to don his new toy - GoPro Hero3 - to film our ski adventure.

Thanks to SQ Kong, whom I skied with in 1987 in Mayrhofen in Austria, for inviting us to join his family.

While SQ and his 2 boys, and Alvin, stuck on to skiing, the ladies gamely took on snow boarding lessons.

< 20 Dec 2015: We skied long blue and red pistes over to Orelle. Alvin and SQ went up to 3230m and came down Coraia red piste as the final last run. However, the ski lifts that would take us back to Val Thorens stopped operation by the time they got down. We were left with no choice but to take the 3 Vallees Express cable car a long long way down to snow-less Orelle town. We ended up paying dearly for a taxi that took us 160km, over 3 hours, to get around the mountain and back to Val Thorens. It was past 9pm by the time we got back, tired and hungry but in good spirit. What an adventure for all of us!

Val Thorens is sooooo beautiful with plenty of blue, red and black pistes.

15 Dec: We arrived in Paris at 8am, boarded a TGV bullet train from airport, changed 3 trains to get to Moûtiers, from where we got a pre-booked taxi and got to Val Thorens at 8pm.

16-20 Dec: Ski, ski, snowboard, snowboard.

21 Dec: We parted company in Val Thorens. SQ and Andrienne and their families headed to Geneva for a few days before returning to Singapore. We headed to Moûtiers to catch the TGV bullet train to Paris.

Skiing with SQ, Kevin and Jason on a long and enjoyable blue piste - Tete Ronde.

Jin, Robyn and Vicky enjoying snowboarding fun at the green piste.

Alvin skied down Col from 3130m, the hardest red piste for the day. It started with a breath-taking scene of the alps at the summit followed by adrenaline pumping skiing all the way down!

This was our final day of skiing in Val Thorens. We skied down many blue and red pistes, including Coraia from 3230m attempted by Alvin and SQ as the final long red run in the Orelle region.

22-26 DEC 2014: Walkabout in Paris, France

We booked an apartment near Pigalle metro station for our 3-day stay in Paris with Airbnb.com.

It's a nice place with a 6 floor climb up an interesting wooden decked spiral staircase.

22 Dec 2015: The Catacombs of Paris are underground ossuaries that hold the remains of about 6 million people. It has more skeletons than the population of Singapore, giving it the reputation as "The World's Largest Grave".

We queued for 2 hours in bitter cold and light drizzle to get in.

23 Dec 2015: We visited the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur. We sat for a while soaking in the peace and serenity in the church.

24 Dec 2015: We were contented with exploring the exterior of the Lourve Museum as the queue was incredibly long and winding.

24 Dec 2015: Christmas Eve up at the Eiffel Tower was a memorable experience. The tower is certainly a grand design of engineering.

After Eiffel Tower, we retrieved our luggages at Gard du Nord and took the train to the airport. We took to the sky on Christmas Eve but couldn't see Santa Claus and his reindeers.

We enjoyed Christmas breakfast at Abu Dhabi airport, and then Christmas dinner at New Delhi airport, and finally arriving in Singapore for Boxing Day breakfast. A lovely multi-stop journey.

Ciao 2014. Welcome 2015!
